Run Samy Run......

Samy Vellu had warned the disenchanted Indian community that they would "pay the price" if they vote for the opposition in March 8 elections.

"If you don't vote for MIC, then be prepared to pay the price," it said in bold red letters, urging Indians not to cast a protest vote for PAS, which rules impoverished Kelantan.

"Vote for PAS and see where Kelantan is today. If you think that you are not progressing under MIC, then you can now imagine getting disintegrated under PAS," it said.

Wow how desperate can Samy Vellu be? He is indirectly blaming the gomen for hardship of Indian communities. Btw. what has PAS & Kelantan got to do with the problem of the Indians? Since MIC & the BN gomen is doing nothing to alleviate their standard of living, the Indian got to turn to an alternative source - the Barisan Rakyat to solve their problems. Adai Samy, kalu lu tak ada mau tolong orang-orang India, ada orang lain yang boleh itu macam bikin.......

On Tuesday, Samy Vellu had to cut his rally short after he was nearly accosted by more than 10 supporters of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) .But when Mr Samy Vellu saw his accosters, he quickly escaped by hopping into his car and driving off to his next destination.

In a separate incident that evening, Mr Samy Vellu was forced to cancel a walkabout in Lunas, Kedah, after 3,000 Hindraf supporters demonstrated against his appearance there, reported Sin Chew Daily. The demonstrators had gathered there at 6.30pm, after getting wind of Mr Samy Vellu's appearance. More than 70 riot police officers were deployed to the scene. This only enraged the Hindraf supporters, who kept shouting at him, saying that he should not leave if he had not done anything wrong. The incident took place at 1pm when Mr Samy Vellu arrived in a market in Prai, Penang, to canvass for votes, reported Nanyang Siang Pau.

On Wednesday night, Samy Vellu was forced to abort a dinner function in Kedah after some 3,000 people reportedly armed with rocks and knives were waiting for him. The sources said recent events revealed that the community's main source of frustration is Samy Vellu and not the party.

MIC Candidates - Ithuthaan Unmai(This Is The Truth)

Samy Vellu has been saying that he is including new faces as MIC candidates for the elections. They're made up of professionals (teacher, doctor, lawyer, etc.). Samy Vellu also said that his selection is based on the capabilities and commitment of the candidates to serve the community.
The following is a brief breakdown of some MIC candidates that you should know before you decide to cast your vote:

S. Anandan

One of the new candidate is Anandan s/o Somasundaram; a teacher. He is the MIC candidate for the Lunas state assembly seat. A lawyer's notice was sent to the school where he teaches demanding to know the disciplinary action taken against S. Anandan following the police report lodged against him by a student.

Dato Saravanan:

Dato Saravanan the MIC candidate for Tapah parliamentary seat is a gangster extraordinaire because he made a name for himself in politics while remaining a gangster in the background. He became close to Samy Vellu in the 1980's. The story goes that at an MIC meeting; a member of the public made a statement critical of Samy Vellu. To defend his boss, Saravanan jumped over a railing and punched the poor guy for daring to criticize Samy Vellu. Ever since then, Saravanan was in Samy Vellu's good books. Saravanan belongs to Gang 08; one of the main Indian gangs in Klang Valley. During MIC and Maika Holdings mettings; Saravanan sends his thugs to ensure no one raises a voice against Samy Vellu. Saravanan also sent his thugs to Batu Caves on the early morning of 25th November 2007 during Hindraf rally. After FRU pushed the people into the temple compound, Indian gangsters closed and locked the main gates. After ensuring the gates are securely locked, the thugs then started instigating the people to retaliate against the police.

S. Sothinathan:

The incumbent MIC parliamentarian for Teluk Kemang (Negeri Sembilan) and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Evnvironment. He helped Samy Vellu hijack 9 million Telekom shares awarded to Maika Holdings. They robbed Indians in broad daylight. Sothinathan with his boss Samy Vellu stole more than RM 120,000,000.00 (Yeap!! That's 120 million
ringgit) from the Indians by stealing the Telekom shares.

S.A. Vigneswaran

The incumbent MIC parliamentarian for Kota Raja (Selangor) and Youth and sports Ministry's Parliamentary Secretary. He is the son of former MIC parliament member in 80's; the late Mr Sanyasi,JP. His cousin; Mr Sellathevan. is a former MIC Youth leader and a Member of Parliament in 90's. His family runs a businesses in port Klang, no thanks to their MIC link. However, he is also a gangster in disguise. His younger brother, S.Balan Kumaran; also known as Seroja Balan in Klang; is a notorious leader of Gang 24, another large Indian gangster group in Klang Valley. Seroja Balan also runs his own scrap metal and haulage business.

Dr Vasan Sinnadurai

The MIC candidate for Pasir Panjang State Assembly seat. is a good doctor no doubt. He was the Head of Orthopaedic Department at Taiping Hospital and resigned the post after being selected by Samy Vellu. Why is he selected from the list of hundreds of capable people? The secret is because he has been Samy Vellu's personal orthopaedic surgeon for years. The foremost criteria for the MIC leaders selection of a candidate is that the person must display ABSOLUTE loyalty to Samy Vellu. The compassion to serve the community is a non-issue. Samy Vellu only wants candidates who will follow his every bark and movement. So Dr. Vasan, you are welcome to join the new list of Samy's slaves.

Kamala Ganapathi and Komala:

I do not want to waste my time writing about these two useless ladies. Tie a saree on a mannequin; elect them into office and they'll do a better job than these two. Word has it that the two ladies were not on the shortlist of MIC's 2008 election candidates. The two it seems met Samy Vellu and cried their hearts and souls out to the useless fellow and managed to melt his heart (if he has any!!) and managed to retain their place. Kamala Ganapathi's late husband was a loyal secretary for Samy vellu and he retained her because she is totally loyal to him and will do anything he says.

On another note, PAS took the trouble to field an Indian as its candidate in the 2008 GE.

Kumutha Raman,29 year old law graduate will be the first non-Muslim candidate standing as a PAS candidate. She is contesting the Tiram state seat against Datuk Maulizan Bujang. She will stand under the Parti Keadilan Rakyat symbol, based on the electoral pact the two parties have made.

cheers.

Video – SAMY Facing his Final Countdown Defeat Slams at Hindraf; Despite Form irregularities allowed to Contest facing Dr Jeyakumar & Independant

SMSes are floating around the last two days calling Indians NOT to vote MIC Candidates. They are no longer Credible.

Time is running out for Samy Vellu and he is in a state of despair. Right up to election time, he still cannot fathom the problems faced by his countrymen when he declared he would lead MIC's elected representatives on “a state-by-state visit to find out the problems on the ground after the elections”. In the meantime he questioned Hindraf motive when he said (listen to his words in the Video Clip”

“You want to finish up the MIC. After that who is going to be there? You are not a Political Party, you don’t have politics. You have a handful of 10,000 Indians with you all young people. What is your plan? What is the future for the Indians? What are you going to do for the Indians? Do you treat the sick people? Do you educate the Indian youths?”

To his dying days in politics, Samy is still unable to perceive the sufferings of the majority of the Indians living from hand to mouth in the lower rungs of society. And all this is his doing. In his efforts to help the community, he and his right hand men have helped themselves to the lion’s share of the little goodies that were given to them.
Samy your time is near, in a matter of days when the final curtain is drawn for you to exit shamefully. You can only hope to win on a single vote. You have finally sober up and realize the reality swelling on the grounds. It is the river of no return for you.

Monday February 25, 2008; STAR; MIC to woo 250,000 non-members
IPOH: The MIC will go all out to woo the more than 250,000 Indians who are not members of the party to vote for Barisan Nasional, its president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said. He said party members have been working continuously to identify the voters, and brief them. “We have 630,000 members, of which 65% are voters. We are confident they will support MIC candidates and Barisan,” he told reporters after submitting his nomination papers to contest the Sungai Siput parliamentary seat here yesterday. The 71-year-old Samy Vellu, who is also the Works Minister, will be facing Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, who is contesting on a PKR ticket, and Independent Nor Rizan Oon. In the 2004 general election, which also saw a three-way fight, Samy Vellu defeated Jeyakumar by 10,235 votes. DAP's Sanmugam Ponmugam Ponnan was the third contender for the seat. On whether he was confident of a bigger majority this time, Samy Vellu said that even a win with a single vote was a victory.

“When I contested for the first time in 1974, I got a majority of only 626 votes. I worked hard and tried to meet the wishes of the electorate, and increased the majority in the next general election,” he said. Samy Vellu said the number of candidates fighting for the seat was not important but that attention should be given to the preparations undertaken by Barisan to win the full support of voters. On MIC’s chances of securing another 100% win in the nine parliamentary and 19 state seats it was contesting, he said a lot of hard work had to be done in three difficult consti-tuencies – Lunas (Kedah), Prai and Bagan Dalam (Penang). He said he would lead MIC's elected representatives on a state-by-state visit to find out the problems on the ground after the elections.

Samy Vellu Says He Is Leaving It To Voters
SUNGAI SIPUT, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- MIC President Datuk Seri S.Samy Vellu who will be defending his Sungai Siput Parliament seat for the ninth term this coming elections, declined to comment on his chances of a bigger majority win at the three-corner fight for the seat. He said he was leaving it to the voters in the constituency to decide their selection of candidate. "We cannot show-off when we are a candidate in an area. We have to be modest and wait for their decision. I do not want to comment on the majority of votes at the moment," he told reporters after handing over his nomination form at the Kuala Kangsar Town Council, Sungai Siput division, here Sunday. The Works Minister will be facing Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM)candidate Dr D. Jeyakumar, who is contesting on the ticket of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, and Independent candidate, Nor Rizan Oon.

In the 2004 general elections which also saw a three-corner fight, Samy Vellu defeated Jeyakumar with a majority of 10,235 votes. DAP candidate, Sanmugam Ponmugam Ponnan was the third contender for the seat. Samy Vellu said the number of candidates fighting for the seat was not important but instead attention should be given to the preparations undertaken by the Barisan Nasional to win the full support of the voters in the area. Meanwhile, the Elections Commission received three protests from three individuals believed to be members of Party Socialis Malaysia (based on the T-shirt worn by them which spotted the word "Parti Sosialis Malaysia"). Two of them protested to the description of "Minister" as Samy Vellu's occupation in the nomination form. The other was a protest to Samy Vellu's date of birth which was different from the date of March 8 as previously reported by The New Straits Times paper. However, Election Returning Officer, Raya Mad Dan Hassan rejected all three protests. He said the registering of "Minister" in the application form was allowed to be used by the administration of the temporary caretaker government as provided under the Constitution. As for the date of birth, he said the EC took into account the date as given in the nomination form and not as reported by a newspaper.

And We're Off!

In Rantings By MM
Marina Mahathir

Folks, I am off to the world's biggest democracy today (which, by the way, my American friends, is India and not the US) so have not had time to peruse the nomination lists and comment. But some quick observations.

Malaysiakini reported that there were all sorts of attempts by candidates Ifrom all parties to disqualify their opponents, including objections to lack of fullstops and 'bin' on nomination papers. Which is quite funny. But certainly not as stupid as the people who tried to field a bankrupt as a candidate in Kelantan who then got disqualified, thus giving PAS not only its first win but its first woman candidate! How's that for irony?

A quick glance at the names seems to reveal that there are a lot of women candidates this time. Many women's NGOs, including the National Council of Women's Organisations (NCWO) had written to all political parties and the state party heads to field more women this time. Most listened but one state didn't; Perlis. They fielded one woman candidate for a few hours and then took it away from her and gave it to a man (who happens to be the MB's brother...). They also took away a state seat from a former woman representative and gave it to HER brother. So overall, poor show, Perlis!!!

OK, I have a flight to catch. Hope to post something later.

IMAGINE.........

Dear Malaysians,

There is a new fad in town, called "the Secret". It says that the universe is abundant, and our potential for success is therefore limitless, save for our limiting thoughts. Everytime we think of a limiting thought (BN sure to win 2/3 majority, BN sure to retain control of the government, fuel price sure to go up, cost of living sure to become more unbearable, sure they'll clamp down on bloggers etc...) we may trigger what is called a self fulfilling prophecy. Now, I don't know if you believe in this fad or not, but my philosophy is not to spit against the wind if possible. So perhaps, for a change, let's not think of the disastrous outcome when we wake up on 9 March 2008. Instead, let's think of this wonderful feeling that we will encounter when we wake up on 9 March 2008 so that it may come true :)

There are two versions to this "dreamscape" so take your pick:

Version 1: BN denied 2/3 majority

The Star, NST, Utusan Malaysia reports:

Opposition creates troubling history

Barisan Nasional for the first time since 1969 was denied 2/3 majority in the Parliament. At the final tally, Barisan Nasional has lost 90 seats in Parliament to the Opposition parties. It has also lost Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kedah and Terengganu while Kelantan remains under the Opposition control. It is estimated that 52% of the voters supported the Opposition, though the breakdown between races are unknown at the moment.

Barisan Nasional Chairman and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi urges Barisan Nasional supporters to remain calm, saying that the voters of all races have spoken, and their wishes must be respected. At the same time, he urged the Opposition not to agitate people to avoid another May 13.

He said he is disappointed with the results, accusing the Opposition for poisoning the peoples' minds with lies spread over the cyberspace and vowed to clamp down on bloggers as a threat to national security. He also warned that without the 2/3 majority, Barisan Nasional government when re-formed under a new Parliament may not be able to push through reforms that he has promised the people, but he will do his best to keep his promises made under the Barisan Nasional General Election Manifesto.

Arising from the debacle, there is indication within the Barisan Nasional camp that the Prime Minister will accept responsibility for the unprecedented set back and at the appropriate time will surrender the reigns of power to his deputy, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

In the meantime, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who led the assault for Parti Keadilan Rakyat, which secured 30 Parliamentary seats, claimed that the Barisan Nasional government can still rule effectively as long as it has a working majority, but now it must listen to the people as the people has spoken loud and clear that things have to change. PKR secured majority seats amongst the Opposition parties in Selangor, and it is anticipated that a candidate from PKR will take the helm of the covetted Menteri Besar seat for Selangor.

In Penang, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang in a frank and emotional statement thanked Malaysian voters for making his birthday wish come true, and that his decades of struggle for justice and fairness have finally paid off. Overall, DAP secured 30 Parliamentary seats and is anticipated, for the moment to be returned as Opposition leader. It is anticipated that as DAP secured the majority of the state seats, Lim Guan Eng will be the new Chief Minister.

Speaking beside his father, Guan Eng promised the Penang people that with a very strong team of assemblymen elect, he will bring far reaching changes to Penang so that in the mid term, Penang could catch up with Singapore, and hopefully reverse some brain drain from Malaysia. He said Penang and Selangor, as the two most developed states in Malaysia, will also blaze the trail to see how Malaysia can move forward from being dependent on the New Economic Policy, but at the same time promise to protect the interest of the poor regardless of race or religion.

It remains unclear which party will take the lead in Terengganu, Kedah and Perak but negotiations are under way. According to party insiders, it is anticipated that the Menteri Besar positions in three states will be divided equally between the parties, with Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri role given to the party that wins the next highest number of seats, to ensure that the states will be governed in a transparent manner, and to show that Barisan Rakyat practices 'real' democracy, power sharing and provides checks and balances internally.

The political leaders for the three main Opposition Parties have also indicated that henceforth, they may formally apply to be established an umbrella coalition known as Barisan Rakyat (BR), which they attribute to the mastermind Raja Petra Kamaruddin, a highly regarded blogger who many said is influential and even instrumental in the Opposition victory. The Opposition Parties, it is learnt, will extend a formal invitation to RPK as he is well known, to join BR.

Perhaps jubilating from the unexpected victory, there is also talk on the ground that the Opposition parties may dissolve to become just BR, thus creating a two-party system like the United States of America or to some extent the United Kingdom. But Kit Siang said all factors need to be taken into account and urges supporters to temper their excitement. He said "if it is good for the rakyat, it certainly warrants serious consideration. But let us for now take it one step at a time. We have a historical opportunity to instead talk, do the walking, and show that the Opposition is not merely a convenient coalition".

Asked what the Opposition will do in Parliament, Kit Siang said at the top of his head, creation of shadow cabinet and to have an Opposition research secretariate to bring greater quality to debate on bills proposed by the Barisan Nasional Government. He also thinks the government may now be more receptive to the idea of private members' bills, which could range from anything to do with abolishing the Internal Security Act, creating the IPCMC, creating an Independent Commission of Anti-Corruption, creating an Independent Commission for the Selection and Promotion of Judges, Freedom of Information Act and Neutrality of Civil Service Act. It will all require tremendous financing, but the political veteran believes that now that BR is a viable force to be reckoned with, right thinking members of the society would be more prepared to give financial contributions for a just cause.

Version 2: The Opposition takes simple majority in Parliament will follow in the next posting by LKS

A Beautiful Election Campaign

By Shamala Suresh Kee

“Malaysian Newspaper Forced to Shut Up” (by Jed Yoong, Asia Sentinal, 22 February 2008) truly made me feel appalled at the recent state of Malaysian press. Cited as an endangered species by Jed, independent newspapers are now extinct with the purchase of The Sun daily by business tycoon, Vincent Tan, whom currently is involved in V.K Lingam trial, a trial that pertains to justice brokerage by the senior lawyer. According to the report, an extensive change in the main line-up of The Sun was made, soon after the purchase. Ho Kay Tat is now being replaced by a new editor-in-chief Chong Cheng Hei and Zainon Ahmad is now the ‘consultant editor’.

I must say, The Sun is a staple read for me and most readers who want vivid and explicit reports especially on recent controversial cases and I am doubtful that we would not be denied that with the shift of ownership. Attempts again attempts are made to control and restrict Malaysian media under the flagship of national and public safety, especially post 13 May 1969 and later during the ‘reign’ of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad starting from 1981. The implementation of the Printing Ordinance in 1948 to curb communist activities posed as the stepping stone towards the control of print media content ‘for national and public safety also to handle sensitive issues regarding race and religion’, as chanted till today by the authorities even after the amendment of the Printing Ordinance to the draconian Printing Press and Publication Act, that does more than regulation of content but also, the ownership of the media.

A critical voice, loud enough to affect the ruling government has never been heard, and the coming election would definitely see stringent measures to subdued the press from reporting shortcoming by the dissolved cabinet in their governing years and much less, proposition on better governance referring to mistakes would be off the limits. What could be seen, though, propagated in Radio television Malaysia are a study on the increase of crime rates in Kelantan (an opposition state), done by scholars from a public university, the advertising of Perkampungan Hadhari in Kota Bharu that promotes Kelantan local produce, the remorse of a ‘Mat Rempit’ and his choice to change and learn ‘multimedia and animation skills’ through free workshops provided by the government, hence supporting the move to make Terengganu the hub of multimedia and animation. The Indians are asked to be thankful to Indian leaders whom had ‘built Aimst and Tafe College for Indian students’ like wise.

What they did not mention was, “How the Indian leaders explain the disappearance of MAIKA Holdings share money”. And, things like, “Is it true that Indian Temples are being demolished at a high rate” and “Why there were 6 protest rallies in the last 4 months?” And, “How is it, the ex-member of the dissolved cabinet, The Health Minister, Soi Lek, got caught in a sex scandal”, or, ‘Why the parliament leaked after RM90 million worth of renovation done in 2005”. And, so on and so forth. And, finally PAS had enough, submitting a memorandum to RTM’s Chief Operating Officer over the slanted, one-sided coverage at RTM headquarters yesterday.

GE 2008 Vote to Deny 2/3 Majority of BN

...Salams,chances are not many people will read what im about to write about the soon to be elections in our beloved country. The reason being I have only given my blog address to very few people and the fact that my writing is probably not very interesting to most people.

First and foremost i would like to welcome those who are first timer voters. In a democratic system the right to vote should never be taken for granted. The process of voting is probably the closest thing most citizens get, to be part of the process of decision making in the future of the country. Although one vote does not make a difference, it is recorded that you have put your view and contributed to one political party or the other. Thats democracy, majority wins, even by one vote ! Of course its not as simple as that for there are variations in the democratic system-its not purely by the total number of popular votes but by parlimentary seats in commonwealth countries and by electrol college in the American system. Im not going into the details of how the various system works for that responsiblity lies with anyone who wants to understandthe various democratic process.

The objective of my writing today is towards the Malaysian voters for the coming general elections. I hope the voters will take this opportunity to vote and vote wisely. I hope voters will vote to state their dissatisfaction towards many of the policies that is currently being carried out by the government. Again if i were to go into the details and analysed the various policies, it will take a very long paper to adress the various issues and policies. One also needs to be objective and not be emotional and have built in prejudices ( this is not easy-as for sure you belong to a race a religion a group etc ) But as an educated person-you must always look at things objectively.

The Government of the day is very smart ( at least the advisors ) it knows that most Malaysians dont read enough. While most read newspapapers, they read different newspapers. Most Malays read the mainstream Newspapers-Berita Harian,Utusan Malaysia,to a lesser extent the Utusan Jawi. A substantial amount read NST or the Star for Englisg Edition. ( Malays and other Malaysians who read English edition read the Star more than the NST ) Unfortunately the younger generation of Malays dont read as much as their counterpart of other races especially the Chinese who read the English and Chinese Edition rather extensively.

Different issues is highlighted differently in each vernucalar paper thus the "same issues" is look at differently by each community and clouded with racial prejudices. Thus very important issues which has national significance ( in terms of unity, identity ) takes a very racial perspective, whereas it should not. For example the issue of Chinese Schools. For a country that has been independent for 50 years we are still discussing issues on the number of Chinese schools etc. The Malay majority government will make statements that it supports Chinese school and will give money ( which the community doesn need anyway ) to increase the number of Chinese school and will move the near empty schools to more populated area to maintain the number of Chinese Schools.

The fact is that the Chinese school system is very good. For Chinese school that has very low student population it is more advisable to make the local population ( Malays,Chinese or Indians) to attend these schools, rather than move these schools or force the students to attend national schools. The Chinese school should also adapt more to reflect its Malaysianess whether in Curriculum or appearence so that the national objective of unity and identity can be acheived. This is easier said than done-but the current practise of increasing Chinese and Indian schools so that the community is happy is playing along racial lines that is suitable to the agenda of the ruling coalition. The issue is not look at objectively but look at from the practical point of view-especially for the political survival of the current racial biased political ruling coalition.

So what does the Newspapers do ? They tell the story that each "community" wants to hear, not of the issues of these schools in the context of National Identity and Unity. This is again a major point in which the country has to settle and discuss and agree-but it cannot be solved by just building more Chinese n Indian schools in the country ! ( N by going to the Malay rural areas and building more religous schools-which is not happening anyway, because the ruling party is worried that this will create more supporters for the opposition ). This is only one major issue which has been dealth wth wrongly by the current government-and not analysed properly by the Newspaper and given the wrong information and impression to the Masses.

For the next two weeks i hope most Malaysians will look at the track record of the current government and be fair to the various political party, look at the candidates not just at the party they represent. We want stability,we want peace but we also want a strong and honest government. We should deny the ruling coalition its 2/3 majority, we should vote out deadwood ploticians and we should make our voices be heard.

Malaysiakini New Edition in Tamil

Malaysiakini now in Tamil, BM site goes free
Feb 24, 08 2:42pm
Both Tamil and Bahasa Malaysia readers of Malaysiakini have reasons to rejoice today - they will now be able to read Malaysiakini in their own languages for free.
Beginning today, new website MalaysiaIndru.com will post Malaysiakini news reports in Tamil. The free site will also carry its own news reports as well as features, letters, opinions and editorials.
MalaysiaIndru, which means ‘Malaysia Today’, is a joint effort by Malaysiakini.com and Semparuthi Publications - publisher of monthly current affairs magazine Semparuthi.
Malaysiakini is supporting the initiative by providing its news material on a royalty-free basis, as well as offering technical, editorial and marketing assistance.
malaysiakini chinese daily translationsThe five full-time members of the MalaysiaIndru team are based at Malaysiakini’s office in Kuala Lumpur’s Bangsar Utama.
"MalaysiaIndru intends to set the news agenda among the Tamil-speaking community by offering independent, insightful news and in-depth analyses and commentaries," says the website’s editor Ji Wi Kathaiah.
"We will not only be translating Malaysiakini’s news and video clips, but we will ensure that major events of concern to the Indian community are well-covered and discussed," he added.
By publishing today’s news today, MalaysiaIndru believes that it will quickly become the leading source of news for the Tamil community.
"In the age of mobile phones and SMSes, breaking news stories can quickly be disseminated to the Tamil community at large," said MalaysiaIndru’s publisher and Semparuthi representative K Arumugam.
"We believe that MalaysiaIndru can be a major force and a voice for the community during these times of political transformation."
MalaysiaIndru will also help bring Malaysiakini news to an even wider audience.
"Since we launched the Chinese and Malay language sections in 2004, our readers have been requesting for a Tamil language section," said Malaysiakini CEO Premesh Chandran.
"After the Nov 25 Hindraf rally, we have been flooded by even more e-mails pleading for news in Tamil. We have finally been able to make this happen and are proud to collaborate with Semparuthi on this ground-breaking project."
Four languages, one team
The launch of MalaysiaIndru fulfills Malaysiakini’s ambition to publish in all the four major Malaysian languages - English, Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil - making it the only media organisation in the country to do so.
"While most Malaysians can speak more than one language, we need to recognise that many of us still prefer to use our mother tongue in our daily lives," said Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan.
"Despite working in various languages, Malaysiakini is different from other media organisations in that all sections work together in one place. We may have four languages, but we’re still one team."
malaysiakini versi bahasa malaysiaGan said that Malaysiakini aims to provide a common platform for all ethnic groups to discuss important issues confronting a complex multi-cultural nation like Malaysia.
He said that no one person, let alone the government, can provide solutions to the perennial problem of national unity.
"For that, we need all 27 million Malaysians to talk to one another so that we can better understand the angst and the aspirations of the various communities. Only then can we begin to seek the necessary compromises." stressed Gan.
With the advent of MalaysiaIndru, a new group of Malaysians can now join in the discussion of national issues.
Also beginning today, Malaysiakini is offering its Bahasa Malaysia language website to all readers for free.
"We made the decision in response to requests that Malaysiakini should be read by as many people as possible at this crucial time when the country is facing a general election," said BM section editor Nash Rahman.

Khairy: My job to take on Opposition; STAR Feb 24 08

REMBAU: Umno Youth number two Khairy Jamaluddin says it is his job to make life miserable for the Opposition. “If I do not rebut the Opposition, it means that I am not doing my job. I want them to know that I am the budak nakal who would go all out to ensure the people vote for the Barisan Nasional again,” he told reporters after a tahlil ceremony at his family home here yesterday. Commenting on the opposition parties labelling him budak nakal (mischievous boy), Khairy said the Opposition would go to great lengths to win the people’s support.
They would happily discredit others for their own gain. They wouldn’t mind resorting to character assassination as they have run out of ideas to fight the Barisan,” he added. Khairy was named by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan yesterday as the candidate for the Rembau parliamentary seat.

SEREMBAN: "This is the place for me"

Those were the first words deputy Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said when he was named as the candidate for the Rembau parliamentary seat. Khairy, whose late father was from Negri Sembilan, said: "If I was given other places, I would not have contested in the election. My focus is the people of Rembau," said Khairy, 32, who is also the BN Youth deputy chairman and Rembau Umno Youth chief. Khairy, who appeared a little overcome, said he was touched and thankful that he was chosen to stand in Rembau and vowed that he would try to be the best wakil rakyat (representative) for the people of Rembau if he was given the mandate in the March 8 polls. Khairy also regarded his candidacy as a sign of BN's recognition and appreciation of the role of Malaysian youth. "I would like to thank the national and state BN for putting their trust in me and I promise to work hard and repay that trust.

Asked about his chances of winning, Khairy said:
"I will leave it to the voters in Rembau to evaluate and choose. It is a new challenge for me and I promise to serve to the best of my ability if given the mandate."He said he would meet and introduce himself to the grassroots and listen to what they have to say and what their concerns were.

"I will co-operate with the menteri besar to bring more development to the area. "The state government has plans to develop the small and medium industries in the area as well to build a branch of a university here," Khairy said. He also thanked Rembau's incumbent, MP Datuk Firdaus Muhammad Rom Harun, who is the Rembau Umno deputy chief, and hoped that he would continue to serve the people there. Asked about the opposition's challenge, Khairy said the opposition candidates were only concerned with attracting

Increasing Oil Subsidy Will Push Up Inflation, Says Shafie
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Increasing oil subsidy by the government will eventually lead to higher inflation, loss of business and lowering of living standard of living, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shafie Apdal said today. "We've heard some parties keep saying that if elected (in this general election), they would reduce the price of diesel and petrol and become more charitable. "I've to remind you the only way they can achieve this is by further increasing the subsidy level which is already RM43 billion a year. "Of course, this is possible, but totally unrealistic and extremely damaging," he said when launching the upgraded website of the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency. The text of his speech was read out by his ministry's deputy secretary-general Dr Muzahet Masruri.

Shafie said that being in government was not about running a charitable organisation as the government cannot ignore the fact that the oil price was hovering at around US$100 a barrel. "Let us for a moment examine the impact of pursuing such a course. Are the proponents of this policy prepared to reduce expenditures elsewhere. Are they proposing fewer schools, less teachers and less healthcare.
"What does being more charitable means, does it mean handouts and other subsidies, where is the money to come from
," he asked. Shafie said the government would not follow a policy that would lead to untold economic disasters and seriously erode the national competitiveness. He said the government was aware of the financial pressures on individuals and families and that was why the government had taken measures to minimise the impact of the inflationary pressures from the hike in global oil price. The measures include careful management and enforcement of price controls, ensuring adequate supply of essential goods, prosecuting hoarders, smugglers and fraudsters, he said.
Shafie said the 2008 budget had offset some of the pressures on families with the lowering and abolishing of the school fees and using every device available to limit price hikes and protect family incomes and standard of living. Meanwhile, the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency, established by Bank Negara in April 2006, today launched its newly upgraded website at www.akpk.org.my, which offers comprehensive information and interactive features. Upgrading of the website is one of the agencys continuous efforts to help the Malaysian public take control of their financial situation and gain peace of mind that comes from the wise use of credit," said its chief executive Officer Mohamed Akwal Sultan.

Todate, more than 26,000 individuals had sought counselling from the agency and about 9,000 customers have been enrolled in its debt management programme. The agency was set up to provide counselling on financial and debt management for individuals to take control of their financial position. Its services are free of charge.

Youths' Future Lies With BN, Says Khairy
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 (Bernama) -- Voters, especially the younger gene-ration, should continue to give their mandate to the Barisan Nasional (BN) to ensure that their future and well-being are looked after. BN Youth deputy chairman Khairy Jamaluddin said only the BN could fulfil the promises made while the opposition parties would not be able to make good their promises. He said the opposition's plan to turn the country into a welfare state would raise the deficit in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 12 per cent and burden the people as it would increase the country's debts. "I hope the youths will look at what each party has to offer. It must make realistic promises. If you look at PKR (Parti Keadilan Rakyat), it makes only empty promises," Khairy, who is also Umno Youth deputy chief, told reporters after launching the Lembah Pantai BN election machinery here tonight. He was commenting on the perceived change of mood among the younger generation following the street demonstrations.

Asked on the feelings of the Indian community towards BN, Khairy said he was confident that it would continue to support BN after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had given his assurance that the government would give serious attention to their problems and requests. "In BN, we have no denial syndrome. Actually, the Indian community still needs our assistance and support," he said.

On the possibility of PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's daughter, Nurul Izzah challenging Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in Lembah Pantai, Khairy said it would not pose a problem to Shahrizat as she was a credible leader. Present at the launching were BN Federal Territory Youth chief Datuk Norza Zakaria and Lembah Pantai Youth chief Norazmi Mohamadan

Stop and dismantle Umno political hegemony, deny Barisan Nasional two-thirds majority

(12th General Election Nomination Day statement by DAP Ipoh Timur parliamentary candidate Lim Kit Siang in Ipoh on Sunday, 24th February 2008)

This 12th general election, unlike the previous 11 general elections, is not just about the next five years but a vote about the first 50 years of Malaysian nationhood and the next 50 years!

To many Malaysians, this general election is the last hope for change and an acid test whether there is a future for the building of a democratic, competitive, multi-racial, multi-religious, secular and just nation which our forefathers pledged to build through the Merdeka “social contract”.

It will be the clincher in the decision-making of many Malaysians whether there is hope to build a democratic, just and competitive Malaysia or there will be a new exodus of braindrain of the best and brightest of Malaysians to other lands in despair at any possibility that all Malaysians, regardless of race or religion, can have an equal place under the Malaysia sun.

Most challenging of all, the March 8 general election offers a golden opportunity to halt and dismantle the four-decade Umno political hegemony which has become the greatest threat to democracy, international competitiveness and national unity in Malaysia.

Umno political hegemony has marginalized not only whole communities of ordinary Malaysians, but even the other Barisan Nasional component parties as illustrated by the ordeal of the Gerakan Wanita Chief, Datuk Tan Lian Hoe, being kicked around like a football Bukit Gantang, back to Gerakan’s Taiping seat, then to Lenggong and now Gerik.

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has said that none of his cabinet ministers except for his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Razak were guaranteed a cabinet position even if they won in the general election – meaning that the top leaders of MCA, Gerakan, MIC for the first time in 51 years are not assured of a Cabinet position if elected.

This the latest twist in the Barisan Nasional ‘power-sharing” and proof of greater marginalization of the other Barisan Nasional component parties because of the unchecked rise of Umno political hegemony.

The challenge on March 8 is whether history can be made to check and dismantle the Umno political hegemony, which marginalized ordinary Malays, Indians, Chinese, Kadazan-Dusun-Muruts, Ibans and indigenous people, orang Asli, by depriving the Barisan Nasional of two-thirds majority.

If DAP, PKR and PAS can each secure 25 parliamentary seats, denying BN of 75 parliamentary seats, then the beginning of the end of the umno political hegemony threatening democracy, international competitiveness and national unity would have begun.

Malaysian PM opens election campaign with cabinet warning

PENANG, Malaysia (AFP) — Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi kicked off his election campaign Sunday with a warning that his cabinet ministers were not assured of jobs in a new administration.

Abdullah formally submitted his nomination for the March 8 polls in the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat on the island state of Penang, surrounded by a sea of supporters from the ruling National Front or Barisan Nasional.

There was heavy security at the nomination centre, with police separating a thousand government supporters from some 500 activists from the Islamic party PAS who shouted the opposition battlecry of "Reformasi" or "Reform."

Veteran politicians who were expected to be ousted in the run-up to the polls have so far retained their positions, but Abdullah hinted in an interview with the New Straits Times that there might be a clean-out after the polls.

"I have made no promises to anyone. I have a free hand (after the election)," he was quoted as saying.

"I did not promise anybody anything; whether a return to the cabinet or any other post," he added.

Abdullah has been criticised over his cabinet, which retained many veteran figures from the former administration of Mahathir Mohamad, and which analysts say has prevented him from carrying out his reform promises.

He swept to power in landslide 2004 elections amid optimism after taking over from Mahathir, but since then has been gained a reputation for being weak and ineffective, and failing to act on key goals like eradicating corruption.

Figures like Samy Vellu, the only ethnic Indian minister in the multi-racial coalition, are contesting the election again despite strong criticism over his handling of recent anti-discrimination protests by Indian activists.

Abdullah defended the old faces in his line-up, saying they were critical to the election campaign, in which the opposition is aiming to deprive the coalition of its two-thirds majority for the first time in history.

"In facing elections, the party must be led by those who have experience because we do not want problems which may affect our chances to crop up due to inexperience," he told the New Straits Times.

Analaysts said Abdullah's popularity, which has already plummeted, would be further damaged if he dashes hopes of rejuvenation in the coalition which has ruled Malaysia since independence a half century ago.

"If things remain as they are with the old guard being retained, then it will be problematic for the future of the party," said political analyst Tricia Yeoh from the Centre for Public Policy Studies.

"If he wants to talk about change he needs to show it rather than just speak about it," she said.

In Kepala Batas, Abdullah is contesting against a candidate from PAS, one of the three main opposition parties who have made a pact to stand just one opposition figure in each seat and avoid three-cornered fights.

"Malaysia is rich with resources but the wealth is only serving the needs of the cronies of the National Front. Corruption is rampant. We promise to stamp it out," said PAS candidate Subri Mat Arshad.

The government is also struggling with public anger over the rising cost of food and fuel, as well as concern over crime rates.
