I love Malaysia, but Malaysia don’t love me

I love Malaysia, but Malaysia don’t love me

January 12, 2008 at 11:16 am ("Look East Policy", "red I/C", A Level, Australia, BN, Bernas, Bible, Brunei, Canada, Catholic, China, Chinese, Christian, DAP, Iban, Indonesia, Johor, Kedah, Korea, Larkin, MARA, MCA, Mahathir, Malay, Malaysia, May 13, Muar, New Zealand, PLKN, PPP, Perdana Menteri, Petronas, Putrajaya, RMAF, RTM1, RTM2, Religion, STPM, Secret Recipe, Singapore National Science Centre, Sultan of Brunei, TV3, Taiwan, bank, corruption, crime, education, election, invention, japan, migrate, najib, pendrive, primary schools, school-text-book-loan, unity, universities, vice chancellors)

“I love Malaysia, but Malaysia don’t love me” said a Malaysia-born translator who is working for Sultan of Brunei now. This sentence is quoted from one of our chinese dailies few days ago. This particular person has been made good use of by Sultan to strenghten the ties between Brunei and China.

Another heartaching story where by the boss of “Secret Recipe” is a Malaysian but he started this multimillion business in Indonesia. I do not know what are the reasons however I think it maybe due to the cheaper stuff in Indonesia.

Do you know who invented pendrive? Don’t get a shocked…a Malaysian invented the pendrive. It is a sad story whereby he went around Malaysia looking for investors to invest in his invention but no one seems to be interested and at last he had no choice and went to other country to find investors. Taiwan is the country that has favoured him and we must really thank him for his brilliant mind.

During Tun Dr Mahathir premiership, he visited Singapore’s National Science Centre. The amazing design of the centre caught his eyes and he asked the person in charge one qustion, “Whose idea is this?” The person in charge answered, “It is a Malaysian idea .” It is really embarassing.

Below are some facts that have affected the people I mention above chose to live a better lives outside of Malaysia.

I duno if 100% of the statistics below are true, but i’m sure tat more than 85% are true. and a sad fact… more n more of the chinese are migrating… even a few of my acquaintances… tat’s wat our government was crying about … brain-drain.

The government said that if we are unhappy, we should speak with our votes. Let’s do that!

Chances are that BN will win the election but let’s make the victory so slim that they will think twice before making decisions that disadvantage and prejudice against the non-Malays.

Tell Pak Lah that enough is enough! Send him and his arrogant team a clear signal. We can cause a chance for the better. Think well before you vote in the next General Election.

Below is the result of extreme discriminations and marginalization by the BN govt for too many years. Let’s keep circulating this especially before the next election.

This list, which needs further update and clarification, covers a period of about 49 years since Independence Day in Malaysia (1957):

(1) Out of all the 5 major banks in Malaysia, only one bank is own by multi-racial, the rest are controlled by Malays.

(2) 99% of Petronas (the only one petroleum company) directors are Malays, and the former Prime Minister works as Consultant in Petronas.

(3) 3% of Petronas employees are Chinese.

(4) 99% of 2000 Petronas gasoline stations are owned by Malays.

(5) 100% all contractors working under Petronas projects must be “bumi’s status” (Malay).

(6) 0% of non-Malays staff are legally required in Malay’s companies. But there must be 30% Malay staffs in Chinese companies and as shareholders. Which means non-Malays who own companies need to give
their property to Malays. And non-Malays citizen can’t really own their business.

(7) 5% of all new intake for government police, nurses, army, is non-Malays.

(8) 2% is the present Chinese staff in Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), dropped from 40% in 1960.

(9) 2% is the percentage of non-Malays government servants in Putrajaya (Malaysia main government office). But Malays make up 98%.

(10) 7% is the percentage of Chinese government servants in the whole government (in 2004), dropped from 30% in 1960. Only 2 positions for non-Malays in political status.

(11) 95% of government contracts are given to Malays; even if it is an open tender. Non-Malays contractors who tender lower prices and use better materials can’t get the contract that the government gives.

(12) 100% all business licenses are controlled by Malay government e.g. Taxi permits, Approved Permits, etc. and all the license are given to government officers families.

(13) 80% of the Chinese rice millers in Kedah (north of Peninsular Malaysia had to be sold to Malays and controlled by Bernas (Government Org.) since 1980s. Otherwise, life will be made difficult for Chinese rice millers.

(14) 100 big companies set up, owned and managed by Chinese Malaysians were taken over by government, and later managed by Malays since 1970’s e.g. UTC, UMBC, MISC, etc. This company now is the sole company.

(15) At least 10 Chinese owned bus companies (throughout Malaysia, throughout 40 years) had to be sold to MARA or other Malay transport companies due to rejection by Malay authority to Chinese application for bus routes and rejection for their application for new buses.

(16) 2 Chinese taxi drivers were barred from driving in Johor (South of Peninsular Malaysia) Larkin bus station. There are about 30 taxi drivers and 3 are Chinese in October 2004. Spoiling taxi club properties was the reason given.

(17) 0 non-Malays are allowed to get shop lots in the new Muar (city in south Peninsular Malaysia ) bus station (November 2004).

(18) 8000 billions ringgit is the total amount the government channeled to Malays’ pockets through ASB, ASN, MARA, privatization of government agencies like Tabung Haji etc, through NEP over 34 years period.

(19) 48 Chinese primary schools closed down from 1968 to 2000

(20) 144 Tamil primary schools closed down from 1968 - 2000

(21) 2637 Malay primary schools built from 1968 - 2000

(22) 2.5% is the government budget for Chinese primary schools. Tamil schools got only 1%, Malay schools got 96.5%

(23) While a Chinese parent with RM1000 salary (monthly) cannot get school-text-book-loan, a Malay parent with RM2000 salary is eligible.

(24) All 10 public universities’ vice chancellors are Malays. And politics in universities are held by Malays. If non-Malays want to form a political party, there is no way to get approval.

(25) The non-Malay lecturers in major universities have been reduced from about 70% in 1965 to only 5% in 2004. The reason that the Ministry of Education gives is that the government gives full support to Malays only.

(26) Only 5% is given to non-Malays for government scholarships over 40 years.

(27) 0 Chinese or Indians were sent to Japan and Korea under “Look East Policy”.

(28) 128 STPM (High Study / A Level) Chinese top students could not get into the course that they aspired i.e. Medicine/Doctors in 2004. Malays without qualifying results got into the course.

(29) Of the 10% place for non-bumi students in MARA science schools beginning from year 2003, only 7% were filled. Before that it was 100% Malays.

(30) 50 cases whereby Chinese and Indian Malaysians, were beaten up in the National Service program since 2003.

(31) 25% is the Malaysian Chinese population in 2004, dropped from 45% since 1957 because the government does not support non-Malays like they support the Malays.

(32) 7% is the present Malaysian Indians population (2004), a drop from 12% since 1957.

(33) 2 million Chinese Malaysians have emigrated to overseas since 40 years ago due to unfair politics.

(34) 0.5 million Indians Malaysians have emigrated overseas.

(35) 3 millions Indonesians had migrated into Malaysia and became Malaysian citizens with Bumi status.

(36) 600000 are the Chinese and Indians Malaysians with “red I/C” (a temporary identity card) and were rejected repeatedly when applying for citizenship for 40 years. Perhaps 60% of them had already passed away due to old age. This shows racism of how easily Indonesians got their citizenships compared to the Chinese and Indians

(37) 5% - 15% discount for a Malay to buy a house, regardless whether the Malay is rich or poor

(38) 2% is what Chinese new villages get compared to 98% of what Malays villages got for rural development budget..

(39) 50 road names (at least) had been changed from Chinese names to other names.

(40) 1 Dewan Gan Boon Leong (in Malacca) was altered to another name ( e.g. Dewan Serbaguna or sorts) after being officially used for a few days. Government tries to shun Chinese names.

(41) 0 temples/churches were built for each housing estate. But every housing estate MUST have at least one mosque/surau built.

(42) 3000 mosques/surau were built in all housing estates throughout Malaysia since 1970 with full government support. No temples, no churches are built in housing estates that is supported by the government.

(43) 1 Catholic Church in Shah Alam took 20 years to get its application for construction approved. But it was told by Malay authorities that it must look like a factory and not like a church. Still not yet approved since 2004.

(44) 1 publication of Bible in Iban language banned (in 2002)

(45) 0 of the government TV stations (RTM1, RTM2, and TV3) have directors of non-Malay origin.

(46) 10 times, at least, Malays (especially Umno) had threatened to massacre the Chinese Malaysians using May 13 since 1969.

(47) 20 constituencies won by DAP would not get funds from the government to develop. Or, these Chinese majority constituencies would be the last to be developed

(48) 100 constituencies (parliaments and states) had been racist re-delineated so that Chinese voters were diluted and Chinese candidates, particularly DAP candidates, lost in elections since 1970s

(49) 20 reported cases whereby Malay ambulance attendants treated Chinese patients inhumanely, and Malay government hospital staffs purposely delay attending to Chinese patients in 2003. Unreported cases may be 200

(50) 50 cases each year whereby Chinese, especially Chinese youths, being beaten up by Malay youths in public places. We may check the police reports provided the police took the reports - otherwise there will be no record

(51) 20 cases every year whereby Chinese drivers who accidentally knocked down Malays were seriously assaulted or killed by Malays

(52) 12% is what ASB/ASN (Malays owned ) received per annum while banks fixed deposit is only about 3.5% per annum.

Malaysia should be for all Malaysians. Why should the Malays become the exclusive Malaysian race? Even the so-called Bumis came from other lands. Some of them even came later than the early Chinese and Indian traders.

We do not seek for more privileges but equal rights. Every Malaysian citizen should be given the opportunities and rights to contribute to the nation and at the same time also benefit from her.

Malaysia should belong to all Malaysians… if not, then we are no better than the foreign workers in the Middle East.

In fact, some government officials say that if the Malaysian Chinese and Indians don’t like to be treated like this, they can get lost. That is why many of Non-Bumi are migrating.

Why Non-Bumiputras Are Migrating?

With all the vitrolic spewing out of UMNO, it is not surprising that there is an exodus to migrate. Over the past few weeks I have spoken to at least half a dozen professionals, mainly in their late-20s and early-30s who have applied for migration. Many are highly skilled accountants and IT personnel.

The main reasons given are;

1. Fear that there will me another May 13th. in the not too distant future, with consequences far worse, than the 1969 episode.

2. Limited educational and job opportunities for their children in the future, as many feel that there is a strong possibility that Malaysia will be economically marginalised and that we are in a downward spiral towards economic doom, once the petroleum reserves are depleted.

3. Deep anger at the racist policies and open discrimination practised by the UMNO based government.

4. Lack of confidence in the Badawi administration in curtailing the extremist Islamic and Malay agenda.

5. Gradual drift of the country towards an Islamic administration, with the eventual implementation of syariah laws for all.

6. Better financial remuneration outside Malaysia, as salaries appear to have relatively stagnated here.

7.Anger that most of the taxes paid by the non Malays are used to support the Muslim bumiputras and very little is left behind for others.Unlike in Australia, Canada & New Zealand where taxes are used to provide educational, social and health subsidies for all, irrespective of religion, race or creed.

Many of these potential migrants possess skills that the country desperately needs.
This brain drain is further going to jeopardise our competitiveness vis a vis our neighbours.

Krishnasamy Received Threats A Week Before His Death, Says Samy Vellu

SEGAMAT, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- State Assemblyman for Tenggaroh Datuk S.Krishnasamy received several threatening calls a week before he was shot dead yesterday. MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, who is Works Minister, said Krishnasamy, who was Johor MIC deputy chairman, informed him of the threats before he left for India on an official visit. "He said the threats went on for a week but he did not take it seriously. I did advise him to be careful. That is all I can say," Samy Vellu told reporters when he came to the residence of the late assemblyman in Bandar Putra here today. He also urged the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the case to ensure those responsible be brought to justice. Samy Vellu said that for a politician or elected individual, receiving threats from dissatisfied people was normal but in this case, it was too much.

ABOVE: The wife was inconsolable to overcome the grievous sudden loss. BELOW: the 2nd Son read out a statement asking people not to speculate what happened to Krishnasamy but to leave it to the police to do the investigation.

"What happened to Krishnasamy can happen to anyone else," he said. He said a circular had been issued to all MIC assemblymen and members of Parliament on the need to take extra precautions to ensure their safety. Samy Vellu said that presently, there were some people within the Indian community who created agitation including in writing to show that the MIC and its elected representatives did not work for the benefits of the community. This was very dangerous because the aim was to sow hatred towards the MIC and its elected representatives, he said. "They write as though the people hate us a lot. When people think we are no longer useful, perhaps a shoot to kill can occur," he said.

Asked whether he believed that Krishnasamy's murder was politically motivated, Samy Vellu said he was not sure. "I cannot say whether it has something to do with politics, a private matter or in connection with the constituency. An elected representative has many connections," he said. However, he said, an elected representative should not be afraid when facing threats from irresponsible quarters. Samy Vellu also said that he was disappointed with the laxness of security at the Johor MIC building and the absence of security guards at the premises when the shooting took place. "I have told the Johor MIC chairman to place new security personnel and install closed-circuit cameras to know who come in and out of theoffice," he said. He also ordered all state MIC offices to review the security aspect of their premises.

The State MIC deputy head was shot once below the left eyebrow, a mark of a professional hitman. The bullet went through to the back of his head. Police are looking at all angles and have not ruled out political or business rivalry, or even money lending and gangsterism as motives. The brutal murder occurred at 2.30pm just as Krishnasamy arrived at the party headquarters for a committee meeting and had entered the lift. The killer is said to have followed him in and shot him while they were in the lift. Abdullah Shocked, Condemns Killing Of Krishnasamy

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has expressed shock over the murder of Tenggaroh State Assemblyman Datuk S. Krishnasamy in Johor Baharu this afternoon, and described it as a cruel and despicable act. He said he wanted the perpetrators of the crime to be brought to justice swiftly.

ABOVE: The Johore MIC HQ and BELOW: The lift where the killing took place

"I am shocked and saddened by the killing of Datuk Krishnasamy. This is a cruel and despicable act," he told Bernama. "I also wish to express my condolences to Datuk Krishnasamy's family," he added. Krishnasamy, 61, who was also the Johor MIC deputy chairman, was shot dead in the lift of the Johor MIC headquarters.

He was found slumped in a pool of blood in the lift at about 2.10pm by Johor MIC Puteri chief R. Vithiya Mohan (ABOVE). The motive for the murder is not known. A witness said he saw a man leaving in a hurry from the building on a motorcycle shortly after he heard what sounded like a gunshot.
In PUTRAJAYA, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak described the killing of Krishnasamy as an incident that has shocked the entire nation.

Expressing his condolences to Krishnasamy's family, Najib said such killings (of politicians) were not part of the culture of this country. "I am saddened by what has happened. It has shocked the entire country. I hope everyone will give their cooperation and leave it to the police to conduct investigations. "The Inspector-General of Police (Tan Sri Musa Hassan) has said police are working swiftly to get to the bottom of it (murder). It's not the first time... previously it (killing of a politician) happened to the Lunas assemblyman... but this (political killings) is not a culture here. "So we have to find out why this happened... whether it was personal or something else. We want to know the motive," he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the National Disaster Relief Managament Committee at his office. In November 2000, Lunas assemblyman Dr Joe Fernandez, 54, who was also the Kedah MIC deputy chairman, was gunned down by a motorcyclist at a traffic light junction in Bukit Mertajam.

In JOHOR BAHARU, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman Othman expressed shock over the incident but advised the public not to make speculations. "Leave it to the police to investigate," he said when contacted by Bernama.

ABOVE: Samy Vellu issued a statement condemning the killing
MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu also expressed shock over Krishnasamy's tragic death. "We have lost a strong and capable leader. I regret the loss of a very hardworking leader who has done a lot for the Malaysian Indian community," he said. Samy Vellu, who is also Works Minister, said Krishnasamy was a close friend, a hardworker and a high performer in politics. "He maintained his constituency well and was constantly in touch with the grassroot members. His death will be a great loss to the community," he added. In the 11th general election in 2004, Krishnasamy, who was born on Oct 5, 1946, retained the Tenggaroh seat for the third term after beating PAS' Sheikh Abdullah Said Salleh by a majority of 8,281 votes.

Family In Deep Shock Over Krishnasamy's Slaying

JOHOR BAHARU, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- The family members of slain Tenggaroh assemblyman Datuk S.Krishnasamy were still in deep shock over his tragic death and were not able to say much when questioned about the tragedy. Nevertheless, his youngest son Raven Kumar, 25, while asking the media to give some space to the family in their hour of grief, said their late father was the best father anyone could have had. ”For now, my family members do not want to say anything. Suffice for me to say that he was the best father. I am deeply shocked and still not able to come to terms with what has happened," he told Bernama. Raven said his mother, Datin N.Sornavalli was still in a state of shock and would not be able to talk to anyone for now.

M'sian ethnic Indian politician shot dead in JB office

Lawmaker S. Krishnasamy, 58, was killed at the office of his party, the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), in the southern city of Johor Baru. --

KUALA LUMPUR - A GUNMAN shot dead a Malaysian ethnic Indian politician on Friday, police said, raising questions as to whether the crime was politically motivated. S. Krishnasamy, 61, deputy state chairman for the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) which is part of the national coalition, was found slumped in a pool of blood at about 2:10pm at the office of his party, in Johor Baru, state news agency Bernama said, but police and the party said the motive behind the attack was not yet clear. After the gunshots rang out, a witness saw a man leaving the building hurriedly and getting onto a motorcycle. '

I am stunned and am very sad about Krishnasamy's killing and I want to extend my condolences to his family,' Bernama quoted Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as saying. Johor Deputy Police Chief Mohammad Mokhtar Mohammad Sharif said a special unit had been set up to investigate the killing. Although political violence is rare in Malaysia, Krishnasamy is the second MIC politician to have been killed in this manner. In November 2000, state assemblyman Joe Fernandez was shot when he stopped at a traffic junction on Penang island.

ABOVE & BELOW: Body taken out onto the MPV

A party spokesman said he 'could not speculate' on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which comes as the MIC is embroiled in a row over the treatment of ethnic Indians in Malaysia. Politics is in turmoil among the minority ethnic Indian population after more than 10,000 Indians staged an anti-government protest in November to complain of racial discrimination and accused the MIC of selling out their interests. 'We don't know the motive. All we know is that he was going to attend a state MIC meeting,' MIC Secretary-General S. Subramaniam told reporters. Asked whether the murder was politically motivated, he said: 'Unlikely. I don't think so. So far, there has been a lot of verbal fight, but not anything of this sort,' he added. The government has cracked down on Indian activists who staged unprecedented mass rallies last year, alleging discrimination at the hands of the Muslim Malays who dominate the country's population.

MIC Chief Samy Vellu has sided with the government, and been criticised for failing to adequately address the complaints of his constituents who say they are marginalised in terms of education, wealth and opportunities. Vellu said he was saddened by the death of his close friend. 'Krishnasamy was a dedicated and visionary politician and a close friend of mine,' he said in a statement. 'The party has lost a voice of the people.' MIC is a senior member of Badawi's 14-party ruling coalition. Abdullah is widely expected to call snap elections in the coming weeks. Around 7 per cent of Malaysia's 26 million people are ethnic Indians, whose forefathers were brought to the Southeast Asian country as labourers by British colonial rulers. -- REUTERS, AFP

State Assemblyman Found Shot Dead In MIC Building

JOHOR BAHARU, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Tenggaroh State Assemblyman Datuk S. Krishnasamy was found shot dead inside a lift at the MIC building in Jalan Segget this afternoon. The 61-year-old politician was found slumped in a pool of blood about 2.10pm by MIC officials. It is understood that earlier, Krishnasamy, who was also MIC state liaison deputy chairman, was headed towards the second floor of the building to attend a liaison meeting. Johor police deputy chief, Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Sharif said a special unit was set up to investigate the murder. He appealed to the public to let the police probe the killing and not to speculate on its motive.
R. Vithiya Mohan (ABOVE, recalling her gruesome find in the lift), the Johor Puteri MIC chief, had found the body in the lift. No weapon was found near the body. According to a witness, a man was seen leaving the place hurriedly on a motorcycle. Krishnasamy is the second MIC state assemblyman to have been shot dead. In November 2000, Lunas state assemblyman Dr Joe Fernandez, 54, was shot by a pillion rider on a motorcycle when he stopped at a traffic junction in Bukit Mertajam. Krishnasamy, who is also a member of the MIC national central committee, became the state assemblyman for Tenggaroh in the 2004 general election. He was also the MIC Labis division chief. Taman Datuk Chellem MIC branch head S. Arumugam said before Krishnasamy entered the MIC building, he (Arumugam) had lunch with him at a restaurant in Jalan Trus, about one km away, together with three MIC divisional heads.

"We just chatted...Datuk (Krishnasamy) had nasi campur," he said. After lunch, Krishnasamy excused himself as he wanted to attend a meeting at the MIC building and left in another car, he said. Arumugam said upon reaching a car park outside the MIC building, he heard two women crying in the building. Vithiya, meanwhile, said she wanted to take a lift to go to the 5th floor but was shocked to find that a body was slumped against the wall in the lift. Police said they were investigating whether Krishnasamy carried a gun himself. His body was taken to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for a post-mortem.

Attack On M. Kulasegaran By Johor MIC Assemblyman An Attempt To Cover Up Improprieties In Maika Holdings And Silence Voices Of Shareholders Seeking The Truth

Media Statement; by Lim Guan Eng; (01/11/2006)
(Petaling Jaya, Wednesday): DAP unreservedly condemns the irresponsible, illegal and violently unacceptable behaviour of Johor State Assemblyman for Tenggarah Datuk S. Krishnasamy in attacking DAP National Vice-Chair and MP for Ipoh Barat M. Kulasegaran yesterday during the Maika Holdings Bhd(Maika) Annual General Meeting(AGM). In his police report yesterday, Kula asked police to act against the Johor ADUN for elbowing Kula and pushing Kula away from the mike when Kula was speaking to the Maika AGM at Legend Hotel in
Kuala Lumpur. Clearly this attack on Kula by Krishnasmy is an attempt to cover up improprieties in Maika Holdings and silence voices of shareholders seeking the truth and why their investment has not resulted in promised returns.

According to the report by Kula, “70% of the over 500 shareholders of Maika who attended the AGM had voted against the first agenda ‘to receive and adopt the Audited Financial Statements for the year ended 31 December 2005 together with reports of the directors and Auditors’. Realising that they were defeated the Chairman presiding the meeting refused to declare the results. This caused great unhappiness and dissatisfaction. In trying to stifle the outcry and shut up the debate without revealing the outcome of the voting, Kula was attacked and the meeting was taken over by those displaying hooligan-like behaviour” DAP expresses disgust at the gangster politics employed by BN parties. Apparently UMNO is not the only one to use threats to silence truth-seekers when they can not explain or justify their actions. Recently such threats were employed against Professor Dr Lim Teck Ghee for being seditious in making conclusions from his academic research that the NEP 30% target for corporate bumi equity has been exceeded based on calculation of market value.

Similar violent tactics were employed by supporters of Port Klang ADUN and Majlis Perbandaran Klang Councillor Datuk Zakaria Md Deros when the public went to his palatial mansion on 29.10.2006. As Kulasegaran said, such violent tactics has no place in our Malaysia political culture. Further violence would not silence ordinary Indians who demand answers why their hard-earned money invested in Maika has not generated returns. MIC President Datuk S. Samy Vellu has a moral obligation and duty to the Indian community to explain the Maika shareholders the value of the investments.

He must also condemn and disassociate MIC and himself from the gangster tactics employed by Datuk Krishnasmy as not only shameful to MIC but also to all Malaysians. Any failure to condemn Krishnasamy and explain to Maika shareholders would only confirm suspicions that MIC is trying to cover up the real truth of what has gone wrong in investments in Maika Holdings. DAP views this incident seriously and expects the police not to be affected by any politicial interference in investigating this incident. Should the police fail to take action then the matter would be pursued further for no one is above the law and even State Assemblyman do not have the right to assault people.

Pak Lah Should Sack Samy Vellu For Disgracing Malaysia In India

A Malaysian cabinet minister on official business in India was given short shrift by a provincial leader who declined to meet the Malaysian politician despite repeated requests. By shamelessly waiting at Chennai to be given the green signal for an ‘audience’ to meet Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and having been humiliatingly snubbed on three occasions, Malaysia’s longest serving federal minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu has brought disgrace to our country. It is an unprecedented and demeaning incident where a senior leader of our ruling party was made to wait hat in hand and finally shown the exit empty-handed, much to his embarrassment and great shame to the nation.

Why did Samy Vellu take it upon himself to ‘clarify’ matters pertaining to Malaysian Indian problems with so many leaders in India? Was it to ‘explain’ the issues as seen by our race-discrimination practising government? Or was it a futile and desperate attempt to mollify the Indian leadership and play down the real truth behind the hardship and injustice faced by Indians in our country?

That he was spurned by the Tamil Nadu CM is not surprising. The wily old fox in Chennai has very deep and close connections worldwide including Malaysia and knows exactly what has been going on and fully realises the culpability of Samy Vellu and the MIC. Already a successful politician in then Madras while Sam was still in Standard Six E, Karunanidhi is the epitome of the shrewd and cunning Indian politico who can be simultaneously benevolent and ruthless. He probably could smell bullshit wafting his way when Sam’s plane touched down at Chennai.

Now that Sam has made a complete fool of himself in India, the PM should sack him on his return. Not only has he shown the propensity to behave like an errand boy of the Indian leadership he has also in a way backstabbed our government by revealing that there was no proof of Hindraf’s terrorist links. In an indirect manner he has confirmed that our PM, Deputy PM, Attorney-General and Inspector-General of Police are all unconscionable opportunists and liars. (I didn’t mention Zainuddin Maidin’s name in the above list because everyone knows that he is an unconscionable opportunist and liar)

Samy Vellu has become a political liability at this crucial juncture when elections are said to be imminent. The Malays despise him, the Chinese can’t stand his arrogant demeanor and the Indians hate him. So why not make use of this opportunity and jettison this long overstaying, superfluous, burdensome and waning political power broker?

Women's Right To Boycott Sexist YBs

Women's Right To Boycott Sexist YBs

Suhakam Vice-Chairman Tan Sri Simon Sipaun said we are living in a democracy and the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG) is free to make its stand as a pressure group in urging the public not to vote for Members of Parliament (MPs) who make sexist remarks and asking political parties not to field them as candidates.

"The group can put their case forward but whether the Government is going to listen to them is another issue. Political parties concerned will have to consider whether there is a basis for the women's call," he said.

Sipaun, however, conceded that remarks made by two Barisan Nasional MPs linking a leaking roof to an Opposition MP's menstruation were uncalled-for.

"As far as I am concerned, we must look at a fellow MP as a human being, regardless of whether she is from the Government or Opposition. Our perception should not be based on gender."

Several Sabah women groups and leaders have expressed their support for JAG's move. JAG is an umbrella coalition of several women organisations - All Women's Action Society (Awam), Sisters in Islam, Women's Aid Organisation (WAO), Pusat Janadaya, Women's Development Collective (WDC) and Women's Centre for Change (WCC).

President of the Sabah Bumiputera Chamber of Commerce (SBCC), Datuk Hj Ahmad Ali Abdul Aziz Lope is confident that the country's leadership will select people of good morals and who have the capacity to serve the nation as candidates for the impending election.

"As far as I am concerned, we want elected representatives who are capable and have the people's interests at heart, and can deliver the goods, irrespective of whether they are men or women. That is most important. I always feel that Malaysians should not play with gender issues. Just don't talk about senseless things like 'skirts'," he said.

LDP Secretary-General Teo Chee Kang said Malaysian People's Representatives should be conscious of the fact that it was because of the support of both male and female voters that they were elected. "It is most ungrateful of them to injure the feelings of the opposite sex by uttering sexist remarks in furtherance of personal agenda best known to them."

Teo, a lawyer, recalled that Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had in his maiden speech as Prime Minister in Parliament stressed that first-world infrastructure must go hand in hand with a first-class mentality. "Therefore, if we want a first-world Parliament, we should not leave sexism and male chauvinism unchecked in Parliament. We should nip the problem in the bud before it goes beyond control."

While saying it is the right of JAG to ask political parties not to field sexist MPs as candidates, PBS Information Chief Johnny Mositun said, at the end of the day, it is the prerogative of the BN top leadership to decide whether they should be re-nominated as candidates.

"I understand the sensitivities of womenfolk in the country. But the MPs concerned have already tendered their apologies. However, if the leadership considers the women's petition and decides to drop the MPs from the candidates' list, then I would think it is indeed a bold decision."

President of the Federation of Sabah Manufacturers (FSM), Datuk Wong Khen Thau stressed that every human being, be it a man or a woman, should be accorded due respect.

Speaking in his personal capacity, he said: "Basically, if we don't respect others, we cannot expect others to respect us. So, those who are disrespectful don't deserve to be respected." He, however, refrained from urging the public not to vote for sexist YBs. "I leave it to them to decide."

Chairperson of Malaysian Nature Society-Sabah, Omar Abdul Kadir suggested that the sexist YBs be given a second chance. "They should have learned their lesson by now and hopefully, they will be more cautious in future, especially in an august house such as Parliament. Let us respect our mothers, sisters, sisters-in-law, wives and daughters."

Meanwhile, he concurred with the President of the Sabah Environmental Protection Association (Sepa), Datuk Susanna Jayasuriya that the Government must give emphasis to environmental issues.

"I hope the incoming elected representatives in the country will do away with sexism but pay more attention to issues like climate change. Malaysia is no exception and we are affected by global warming. It is imperative that we do something about it."

Professional counsellor Dr William Liew supports the call to stop making sexist remarks in Parliament. He said it is shameful to make derogatory remarks aimed at another gender. "Stop making fun of another gender. Stop hurting others. We need to respect a fellow human being. But before we can do that, we must respect ourselves first, whether we are politicians, professionals, non-professionals or ordinary citizens. This is the basic principle of human relationship in all areas of activity." (Daily Express, Sabah)

***** Boycotting these uncouth bastards is the only logical thing to do. However the first step is to categorically let it be known to the leadership of BN especially Umno that they should refrain from proposing these lowlife or be prepared to face the consequences. If the political parties still persist in nominating them, which I think they will, then JAG should harness every and all resources available to them to ensure the defeat of not only these loudmouths but all the others, especially women MPs who sat through silently when their sisters were being humiliated in Parliament.
