Karpal urges speedy police probe into Dr M's alleged threat against judge

KUALA LUMPUR, Fri:

DAP chairman Karpal Singh has urged the police to speed up their investigations against former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over allegations that he had threatened judges in 1997.

Karpal Singh had lodged a report against Dr Mahathir following High Court judge Datuk Ian Chin’s claim that the former premier had threatened to remove judges by referring them to a tribunal.

“Since Dr Mahathir is willing to be investigated, police should speed up their investigations.”

Chin alleged that Dr Mahathir had issued a thinly veiled threat to judges during a Judges Conference on April 24, 1997. Police have taken Karpal’s statement in connection with his police report lodged against Dr Mahathir.

On May 17, and again on Thursday, Dr Mahathir said he was prepared to be investigated so that the truth could be told.
Karpal also urged all judges who were involved to come forward and give their statements to the police. “Why are they all silent?”

Karpal said judges who were threatened should come out and speak. “It took Justice Chin 11 years before he broke his silence. I hope other judges would follow by example.”
